Stinger Style...
I’ve been tying a few Intruder style flies for Chile and Patagonia recently with trailing “stinger” hooks. Some folks swear by them for increased hookups . This lot are for Chinook or King Salmon. I love tying for far flung places. These big flies are fished with Skagit setups, big rods and very fast sinking tips. Not for the faint hearted!
The flies are tied on Waddington shanks, which are available from 15mm up to 55mm which gives a slightly weighted fly. If more weight is required , dumbbell eyes can be easily tied on
I use wire for the hook length which is glued and bound down tightly, the hook is then simply attached and as a bonus can be easily changed or inverted as required
As an avid experimenter I took the idea and translated it to some more traditional salmon flies. Templedogs sit really well on the shanks, as do shrimp patterns. It also solves the problem where only single hooks are permitted as a few rivers in Scotland are in Spring. I know a few anglers who only fish singles these days,
I’ve listed a few here
As always, if you don’t see the pattern or configuration you like please get in touch
Many thanks for reading 😊
